Buchanan High School Leo Club – Community Easter Egg Drive Thru
by Rebecka Hoyt
Blue skies, plentiful sunshine, and winds gave the Buchanan High School Leo Club a great day for their Community Easter Egg Drive Thru on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at the Common in downtown Buchanan, MI. Families loaded up their vehicles with their kids and others came in with strollers from Oak Street, to Roe Street, and into the back entrance of The Common parking lot. They were all greeted by the Easter Bunny, whose ears kept being pushed down over its eyes due to the wind! Next stop was the table for kids ages six and older that was covered with 500 paper bags of candy and some little toys along with a Flavor Ice popsicle (they weren’t frozen though). For the kids who were ages 5 and under, the last table had 300 bags of candy and a stuffed bunny and/or some soft Easter baskets.
The Buchanan High School Leo Club put the word out to the community on Facebook that they were accepting donations of bagged wrapped candy and boy did our great community respond! 500+ pounds of candy were donated or bought with funds that the club received from local donors such as: The Buchanan Scarecrow Charities, Honor Credit Union, United Federal Credit Union (candy), Flagstar Bank, B & W Olde Village Inn, and the Buchanan-Galien Lions Club and members.
Leaders of the Buchanan High School Leo Club are Alice Kring and Brian Fisher. They had eight students participate in this event. Buchanan High School senior, Kady Roberts states that “We are dedicated to make the community come together, and make their end of the day a better day for them. We help the community in the areas of receiving hearing aides and eye care.”
Last year (2020), in June, they did a belated Easter Egg drive-thru and had about 100 people attend. No counting of cars/people happened at this year’s event, but estimated from the cars seen and goodies given, there were probably close to 100 people that attended. Esther Florey, 90 years young, a friend of Alice Kring, arrived at the drive thru, made history by being the oldest person to attend, and she received a bag of candy from the Easter Bunny. The big smile on Esther’s face was priceless, just like the kids and parents smiles, waves, and “Thank yous” from their vehicles! I am sure that having this Easter Egg Drive Thru enhanced their Easter weekend.
The Buchanan High School Leo Club plans to do this again next year, as Alice Kring stated, “We hope to have the actual Easter Egg Hunt like in years past.”
