American Heritage Girls (AHG) is a Christ-centered character and leadership development program for girls 5-18 years of age. The AHG Tagline is Faith, Service, and Fun! For the girls in Mi2006 chartered to Buchanan Christian Church, they have been doing a lot of each. Recent meetings and outside events have included:
- working on their “Girls in Prayer” Award
- completing the “Our Flag” badge
- participating in a puppet day event with another troop
- building pinewood derby cars and then holding a race
- planning an upcoming camping trip
- participating in a Mother-Daughter Event
The Mother-Daughter event was a Baby Shower for Life Plan (crisis pregnancy center) in Niles. Julie (age 11) planned this event as a part of her work on her Lewis and Cass Award. She planned the games, crafts, and snacks. She set everything up, ran the party, and cleaned up afterwards. Learning leadership skills like these is part of the progressive leadership development in AHG.

After the Baby Shower, three of the girls from the troop took the gifts to Life Plan. They were given a tour of the facility and learned more about the ministry of Life Plan. They were able to share AHG with the Life Plan staff. Learning to respect life from conception to natural death is a core part of the AHG program. In AHG girls ages 5-18 meet at the same time. Part of their meeting time is all the ages together, working on a common project and part of the time they meet in smaller groups by age levels. The older girls learn to mentor the younger girls. Many bonds are built between the girls.
