Ottawa’s All Kids Bike Program

by Editor Rebecka Hoyt & Ottawa Principal Stacy Denison

Our school spotlight for this 2nd issue of May 2021, is from Principal Stacey Denison at Ottawa Elementary School, which houses the Preschoolers – 1st graders. They just started an all new “All Kids Bike” program. And how appropriate for the season we are in, as school is nearing the end. So, as you’re driving around town, keep an extra eye out for kids on bikes. I believe that I have seen more around, which is a good thing. Also, The Buchanan Chronicle wants to give a HUGE “THANK YOU,” to everyone that was involved in the bike program as this is how our community can help these kids!

Stacey Denison, Principal of Ottawa Elementary School, wrote to us saying, “Jessica Leenhouts, Elementary Physical Education Teacher, worked with All Kids Bike to raise monies to support this program. Community members, local businesses and the Michigan Gateway Foundation contributed funds to support this initiative. A class set of 24 balance bikes and a teacher bike, along with helmets were provided to implement the physical education course. Ottawa Elementary is the first school in Michigan to implement the All Kids Bike Program! Jessica Leenhouts stated, “There are many kids that do not know how to ride a bike. This gives them an opportunity to learn at an early age and develop a hobby they can enjoy for a lifetime.” Thank you to Bike Buchanan for helping to assemble the bikes!”
