The Senior Center
by Mayor Sean Denison
This morning I had the honor and privilege of being invited to the Buchanan Area Senior Center for a coffee chat. When I was told that I would have to speak about myself and my ideas for the City for an hour, I was petrified. I’m not necessarily good at talking about myself, and wondered how I would ever fill an hour’s time. I’ll cut the story short – I didn’t have to. The folks who were in attendance were full of questions. Good, intelligent questions about City operations and infrastructure. Questions about our Police force and City owned properties. The hour flew by. We should have scheduled it for two.
As I left the Senior Center and drove on to work, I realized what a gift the whole experience had been to me. I sincerely love being around folks who are wiser than me, and even though I was attempting to answer their questions – they were teaching me. How to remain being an active citizen, how to be informed, how to be polite and respectful of others -and on, and on. What a great way to start a day!
The moral of this story is: Go spend some time at the Buchanan Area Senior Center. If you really listen….you’ll learn something.
