Fun Events at Buchanan Area Senior Center

by Rebecka Hoyt, Editor & Photographer

Now that the state of Michigan is open, the Buchanan Area Senior Center has plenty of activities for our senior community to take part in. I sat down with Executive Director, Adam Burck and Program Coordinator, Diana Smuda and learned about those events.

GrandPad tablets are available for the seniors to check out for one month at a time. These tablets, which are very simple for seniors, are similar to other well known tablets that contain similar apps like: surf the internet while inside and outside of town, take photos, send an email, make a call, join a Zoom meeting, check the weather, play music and games. One nice thing about the call feature is that scammers cannot send them a call. Buchanan Area Senior Center (BASC) received a grant from the Michigan Gateway Foundation in order to get the GrandPad’s. “If the seniors need help after a walk through help/training that is provided at the BASC, there is a 24-hour helpline that goes through GrandPad. We are still testing it out and might get upgraded tablets in the future,” stated Adam Burck.

Their current initiative is to expand the facility by enclosing the patio/balcony to create additional programming space. There will be a campaign in the future to make that possible.

The Compassionate Callers Club (aka CCC), is still plugging away Monday – Friday from 10am -12Noon to check-in on their seniors.

Diana Smuda, the Program Coordinator shared that many events/education/informative classes are coming up: “Coffee Chats are held the first Wednesday of each month where businesses and others talk about their specialties/talents (and the editor and publisher of this great newspaper will be there in August!). Speakers come in and talk about dementia/alzheimers. I&M – money for bills program; different levels of exercise classes, art classes like jewelry making, journaling, sewing & quilt making. Fiber Friends is a class that uses materials made up of fiber like yarn and cardstock that meet on Fridays.” The most popular things to do are: Birthday Bingo, card games like Euchre and exercise classes include: the ever popular Tai Chi, chair yoga & chair exercise, line dancing, and Power Beats (held outside when it’s not too hot/cold). If exercise isn’t your cup of tea, join their book and movie clubs!

Their Walking Club includes: Notre Dame campus, nature preserves like Fernwood, as well as Mount Tabor. Some trails are either wood/paved. It will be noted if classes and field trips require a small fee, but most classes are free.

A ribbon cutting ceremony of their Community Garden will be happening soon. Stay tuned for more information. Also, if you have any fruits/vegetables that are in abundance in your garden, feel free to leave some in a bag at the Buchanan Area Senior Center on 810 Rynearson St., Buchanan, MI 49107 and they will gladly share with their patrons.

For more information on programs/classes you can contact Program Coordinator, Diana Smuda at the BASC at 269-695-7119 or via email: diana@thebasc.org
