Kyle Welch, a senior at Brandywine High School has been working on his Eagle Scout Project. He decided to put in steps in the Stafford Woods Park (map link) at McCoy Creek on the west side of Schirmer Parkway here in Buchanan, MI on August 12, 2021. You can get to it from the main parking lot, but it can be quite a hike where there is a bench located at the top of a hill – a steep one, or from the west side of Schirmer Parkway at the curve and you enter on a footpath. Please watch out for traffic if you park on the side of the road. He had the help of his Troop #541 and leaders.

When asked why it was important to him in why he chose this as his Eagle Scout Project, he said, “To help the community make their way on the McCoy Creek Trail as it is very steep and make it accessible. It makes me happy and the satisfaction in the OA to be a cheerful servant and you live like that, and it makes you feel better. I have done countless service projects for the community and I love doing it.” Our community should be very grateful for this idea that he came up with before Covid-19/December 2019, and now they finally have the opportunity to complete the project. The walk down to the bridge that his troop put in before is a steep one. There is a well-needed railing as well as a bench. While observing the troop placing the steps, they would come upon all sizes of rocks and many roots! They were prepared with axes, shovels, and a reciprocating saw to remove them.

Kyle stated, “The troop in the last decade have done other projects on the McCoy Creek Trail from the Pressey Tower out by the high school, the bridge at the bottom of these steps, and bird houses.” The scouts in the troop are: Kyle, Tristan, Jase, and Daniel. Along with three adults: Bill Blunka, Dave Guisbert and Jeremy Lausch. Kyle has helped on previous Eagle Projects in the past, so he knows the kind of work that goes into these projects. He has been in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts since 2009.

Kyle’s plans after school is to go into 3D artist/creative games. He would like to make a Sci-Fi game series ever since he was in the 5th grade. So, go on out there and check it out. Just be careful that you don’t get carried away by the mosquitoes on a humid day! Thank you Kyle for helping to care for our community and another safe way for others to discover the McCoy Creek Trail.
