This summer in Buchanan, a partnership between the Buchanan District Library and the city’s One Buchanan board is promoting the idea that the town that reads together, succeeds together.

“We’ve given out a lot of books,” said library Director, Meg Paulette. “More than 130 copies. It’s great to know so many people are reading this important book.”

The book is Caste: The Origins of our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson. The Buchanan District Library won a grant from the American Library Association (ALA) to support the creation a community-wide reading program called One Book | One Buchanan, and partnered with the City of Buchanan’s One Buchanan board to choose the book. One Buchanan started as an independent nonprofit in 2016 and became an official city board in January 2021. One Buchanan’s mission is to advance Buchanan as a city that welcomes and cares for all people irrespective of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or sexual orientation.

Before the event Sarah Gault, Community Outreach Coordinator, mentioned, “We know, and hope, that the discussion will take many turns, so we ask that participants come with a listening ear and an open mind! Everyone is welcome, even if they have not had the chance to read the book.”

Meg Paulette had added, “It has been wonderful to work with One Buchanan on this project. They not only helped us choose the book (Caste), they have also continued to work with us as we plan for the event.”

That event was a community-wide discussion held at 6:30pm on Wednesday, September 1st at Buchanan Common, an outdoor venue located behind the library. Everyone was welcome to attend, not just those that participated in One Book | One Buchanan. Sarah Gault, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Buchanan District Library, facilitated the discussion, and was joined by a panel of community leaders.

The panel included:

  • Mrs. Trish Robinson, Superintendent of Buchanan Community Schools and One Buchanan board member
  • Mrs. Ruth Writer, Buchanan Community Schools board member, One Buchanan board member, and retired Buchanan High School Social Studies teacher
  • Dr. Harvey Burnett, Sergeant at the Buchanan Police Department and Professor of Psychology at Andrews University
  • Mr. Adam Burck, Director of the Buchanan Area Senior Center and One Buchanan board member
  • Ms. Karen McGuirt, teacher at Moccasin School and trustee on the Buchanan District Library board
  • Mr. Kadin Mills, Buchanan High School graduate and student at Northwestern University in Chicago.

BDL simply cannot say a big enough thank you to everyone who was a part of our One Book | One Buchanan event, but we’ll try anyway!

  • Thank you to everyone who came and listened, shared, and learned with us.
  • Thank you to our outstanding panel of facilitators: Patricia Robinson, Ruth Writer, Harvey Burnett, Karen McGuirt, Kadin Mills, Adam Burck, and of course, Sarah Gault!
  • Thank you to our volunteers who helped us set up, tear down, provide A/V, refreshments, and more!
  • Thank you to One Buchanan for being an amazing partner to us throughout this whole program—we could not have done it without this group of hardworking and dedicated people.

  • Thank you to Isabel Wilkerson for writing this powerful and important book.
  • And thank you to the American Library Association for awarding us a Libraries Transforming Communities grant that made all of this possible in the first place.
