By now, you’re likely aware that the scarecrows are up throughout Buchanan. The Buchanan Scarecrow Charities have hung 242 scarecrows all the way from the east side of the city limits throughout the whole downtown area streets and to the west end of Buchanan on Front Street.

As I made my way downtown on Front Street by Union Coffee House and Cafe, Katie DeVlaminck and Betsy Kutemeier were getting the coffee house scarecrow up on the light post. For a short time, I became one of their volunteers as I was taller than them to tie part of the scarecrow to the pole! I am sure after they were done hanging these scarecrows that they needed a good rest. Even with the high heat that came upon them, they started early in the morning for two days with their volunteers. Katie is a recent BHS graduate and the recipient of their BSC Scholarship. She will be attending Michigan State University this fall.

They would love to have more volunteers! So, if you would like to volunteer some of your time to help create or put up the scarecrows, Betsy Kutemeier stated, “It’s not a full-time commitment, anyone can come help.” They come out with a new t-shirt design each year. This year’s theme is, “I make scarecrows, what’s your superpower?”

Down at the intersection of Red Bud Trail and Front Street by the “Welcome to Buchanan” sign, the theme of the scarecrows is the long-known TV game show of Jeopardy. The answer that’s given is, “Reader’s Digest voted this city as the nicest place in America in 2020” and all three contestants: James, Ken and Brad say “What is Buchanan, Michigan?”

Buchanan Scarecrow Charities President, Jean Rose says, “Ideas come to us when we make them on how we’re going to pose the scarecrows as well as when we are at that spot to hang them up.”

According to their Facebook page, in January of 2013 Buchanan Scarecrow Charities was formed as a non-profit organization. All profits remain local and benefit the Buchanan area. They have been working out of the 324 Building on Dewey Street as their new location on Carroll Street in Buchanan is being constructed and should be completed by the end of this year. Stay tuned for more details on when they open up.

The scarecrows will stay up until November 1st which is a big job to do, but not as hard as putting them up. All of the clothing and props get washed and cleaned, and are stored for next year. You may donate overall bibs and flannel shirts from sizes of 18 months old to large adult. Please donate if you can AFTER they move into their new place. So, go and take a look at all the scarecrows and be careful when you’re driving to watch where you are going and looking.
