Trek-or-Treat at McCoy’s Creek Trail (2021 Welcome to Candyland)
Submitted by Jerry Flenar
In Buchanan, ghosts, witches and assorted characters are making preparations for the 16th Annual Trek-or-Treat event. Kids and parents should mark their calendars for SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30 FROM 12:30-2:00 PM for great family fun. Once again, 25 to 30 Halloween characters will be passing out candy to children and parents as they trek their way through a portion of the woods on McCoy’s Creek Trail. The event sponsor, Friends of McCoy’s Creek Trail, made over 1,400 trick or treaters happy and a bit hyper last year. This event has grown every year since 2005 and we expect this year to be no different. If you haven’t had the opportunity to walk our unique trail, this would be an excellent time to see a small part of the entire 5 mile trail.
Who can you expect to see? How about a green giant, witches, a firefighter, a snowman, a mountain man, a police officer with McGruff, the Crime Dog, plus other movie and cartoon characters. We are always looking for new costumed adult characters to appear in the woods. If interested, please call Jerry Flenar (269-240-5371) in advance. To be a character, you must be on our list before the day of Trek-or-Treat. We don’t want surprise characters showing up unannounced since safety is imperative for our children. We need fun characters only (no bloody ones with chainsaws, etc.); we have lots of tiny “beggars” and don’t want to scare anyone.
Entrance and parking to this fantastic event will only be from the Clark Laboratory parking lot off Front Street. We believe this large parking lot will make the day simple and safer for all participants. There will be no parking on Schirmer Parkway or in the Trail parking lot off Schirmer Parkway.
The biggest question we get is “How is this event funded?” Simple answer is you: our Buchanan community donates tons and tons of candy. Please help us again by donating candy to this super fun annual event for our children. As we say, no donation of candy is too small but, must be unopened. Candy may be dropped at several locations including Buchanan City Hall, Redbud Insurance, Buchanan Senior Center and Redbud Fitness until 2:00 pm on Friday, October 29.
Please note, we do not allow dogs (service dogs excluded) at the Trek-or Treat event.
WE NEED CANDY DONATIONS, WE NEED CANDY DONATIONS

About Friends of McCoy Creek Trail: The Friends of McCoy Creek Trail was established by Resolution of the City of Buchanan in April 2004 as a subcommittee of the Buchanan Area Recreation Board. Friends of McCoy Creek Trail have gathered in unity to develop and pursue a trail through the City of Buchanan. They have developed pathways through E. B. Clark Woods on the south side of McCoy Creek and have continued the trail to downtown Buchanan along the Creek. They host events such as a 5k Extreme held in August and Trek-or-Treat for Halloween. Public can walk, run or just enjoy a stroll through the woods.
