2022 Apprenticeships at Edgewater Automation in Buchanan

by Miranda Barger

The words engine and ingenious are derived from the same Latin root, ingenerare, which means “to create.” Engineering is a great body of special knowledge; preparation for professional practice involves extensive training in the application of that knowledge. So it was a very proud day for the carefully selected engineering apprentices of Bucktown’s Edgewater Automation. They will be utilizing their new skills hands on in a fast paced and dynamic field.

The mood was electric and anyone in attendance could tell that the new engineers were elated to be one of the few selected and excited to start implementing their progressive new solutions to the dilemmas that will be presented to them. Seeing what makes this particular challenge so difficult is easy. Whilst issues, bugs and problems are hurled at them like that of a fastball pitching machine they must develop solutions, and their solutions must satisfy conflicting requirements. Typically, efficiency costs money, safety adds to complexity, and improved performance increases weight. That is just one of the many, many, many, many formulas that the apprentices will master in their training.

“If your sensei makes no sense, either they are a nonsensei, it is a test or both” – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Given the current resource and economic climate their quest is an arduous one. Their problems may involve quantitative or qualitative factors; it may be physical or economic; it may require abstract mathematics or common sense. They will be trained to make the tough decisions while meeting crucial deadlines in support of their projects success. The apprentices will be implementing the process of creative synthesis or design, putting ideas together to create a new and optimum solution.

“Stress testing is the best testing” – (non)sensai

The many reasons that make this group so special are truly fascinating. In order to be more specific, automation engineers are able to design, program, simulate and test automated machinery and processes. Automation has revolutionized those areas in which it has been introduced, and there is scarcely an aspect of modern life that has been unaffected by it. In my opinion, automation is the vanguard of innovation and the team should be exceptionally honored. On behalf of myself, The Buchanan Chronicle we would like to welcome and congratulate the students in this momentous milestone. We look forward to see how your insight enhances our fair city!
