  • School Highlight – Mrs. Shelby Beasley, Buchanan Middle School Principal shared with the board the Magic happening within BMS.
  • Audit – Alex Schaeffer from Kruggel Lawton CPA, presented their audit findings to the board.
  • Superintendent Robinson presented the district’s spring 2022 data and testing scores.

Information/Reports & New Business

  • Finance Committee, October 25th Meeting – Mr. Lee stated they reviewed the audit findings.
  • Curriculum & Programming Committee, November 1st & 14th Meetings – Mrs. Writer updated the board their November 1st meeting they reviewed policy regards to materials, discussed BHS class size, reviewed Mrs. Robinson’s data presentation, curriculum review of Wonders, and overnight field trips for athletics. The November 14th meeting Mr. Pruett and Mr. Flowers joined the committee focusing on BHS 8th grade electives and AP courses among others.
  • Human Resources Committee, November 2nd Meeting – Mrs. Writer informed the board they spoke of job transfers, resignations, 2nd grade teacher, Mr. Place teaching CISCO, and review of staffing.
  • Facilities Planning Committee, November 9th Meeting – Mr. Carlson said they hosted three presentations from three different companies for possible services with BCS regarding bond work.
  • Farm Advisory Committee, November 16th Meeting – Mrs. Laesch updated the board that winter came early, there are equipment repairs, and communication with advisory members.

School Farm Land Lease

Student Discipline – Expulsion Hearing

  • MOTION by H. Burnett, SECONDED BY Member C. Lee, the Buchanan Board of Education adopts the following resolution:
    • WHEREAS, the administration has presented to the Board of Education, a recommendation concerning the expulsion of a student who was in violation of Buchanan School Board Policies #5772 and #5610 on Wednesday, November 9th, 2022; and
    • WHEREAS, the administration has notified the student and parents involved of the accusations against the student, the recommendation of expulsion, and their rights to a hearing on this date;
    • NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:
    • The Buchanan Board of Education chooses to expel Student #7300997342 from attendance in Buchanan Community Schools with the following conditions to be met for possible reinstatement to Buchanan High School for first semester of the 2023-2024 school year:
      1. Through the remainder of the 2022-2023 school year we request that student 7300997342 successfully complete the current grade level while attending BVA, the Step Up Program, or another alternative setting.
      2. The student must have six sessions of counseling completed with an outside the school district professional (responsibility of parent/guardian) prior to re-admittance meeting with the Superintendent of the Buchanan Community Schools.
      3. Upon the completion of the first two steps the student and parents/guardians must contact the Superintendent of Buchanan Community Schools to schedule a readmittance hearing back into Buchanan Community Schools.
      4. Any recommendation will be reviewed by the Buchanan School Board before a
        decision to reinstate student #7300997342 will be made. (Student may be readmitted if all Board policies have been met.)

Questions & Comments from Board Members

  • Dr. Carlin congratulated Harvey Burnett and Jennie Brackett on the school board election.
  • Mrs. Laesch wished students and staff a Happy Thanksgiving. She also invited all to Moccasin PTO Fundraiser at Michigan Gateway Foundation Saturday for some hot chocolate.
  • Mrs. Writer mentioned that yesterday was the official 100th Anniversary of BHS.
  • Dr. Burnett congratulated Jennie Brackett and welcomed her to the school board. He also gave a shout out to Laura Henckel and wished everyone a good Thanksgiving.
