Cans for Veterans Annual Drive Donations Given to Local Veterans
by Rebecka Hoyt, Editor, and Garrick Stubblefield, Writer, and Jen Garry, Publisher and Photographer
Amazing News: The Buchanan Chronicle raised over $700 in this year’s Cans for Veterans donation drive, and each veteran at the American Legion Post 51 monthly meeting December 2022 received a $25 gift card (or two) from one of these local Buchanan businesses: Harding’s, Rite Aid, Gary Z’s Sub Shop, BP, Citgo, Marathon, and Phillips 66 gas stations. Remaining gift cards were then passed along to Veteran Judge Advocate Larry Money to give to RAM for when veterans are in need. Funds from the drive also covered the costs for the Korean Vets Annual Chicken Dinner that is coming up soon. We hope that this will brighten up their holidays.
We would like to thank everyone for their support in donating your returnable cans/bottles this year. The Cans for Veterans Donation Drive will return next year so be on the lookout for when the collection boxes will be out again (late summer 2023). Also, thank you to each business that hosted a donation collection box for us: Buchanan Area Senior Center, Harding’s, Do It Best Redbud Hardware, and Buchanan District Library. We really appreciate your participation in helping us make this happen!
One more HUGE thank you goes to our writer and veteran, Garrick Stubblefield who has spent many hours making the boxes, picking up and returning all the cans/bottles, and turning in the money. Your work does not go unnoticed and thank you for your service to our country. We appreciate all that you do!
In his address to our local Veterans at the American Legion Post 51 monthly meeting on Thursday, December 01, 2022, Garrick spoke with emotion stating the following:
“I and my fellow team members of The Buchanan Chronicle stand before you and showing us your great honor to us by serving our country. I and you made that sacrifice to protect our great country. No matter if you barely made it past boot camp to a possible war, we tip our hats to you for going that extra mile to make us free. You veterans need the deserving respect and gratitude to where no one should ever take away from you. Just remember you were the ones that helped us stay free. In my closing remark I want to salute and say thank you for your service.”
The Buchanan Chronicle is so grateful for all the community support to help us make this donation drive happen. Our whole purpose for the drive is to give back to our local veterans and to show them our eternal gratitude, especially during the holidays. Small tokens though they may be, we will forever be appreciative for our freedoms and those who ensure and protect them.
Thank You Veterans, we are ever grateful!
