Michigan Gateway Community Foundation here in Buchanan, MI is giving back to the communities they serve by offering a “Show Me The Money Day” on Saturday, May 6, 2023 in the heart of downtown Buchanan. The event is being held at Redbud City Center 131 S. Oak Street on Saturday, May 6 from 12pm – 4pm.

“Show Me The Money Day” is a financial and community resource fair with three great informative workshops, while a free lunch of hotdogs, chips, cookies and beverages and drawings for prizes/giveaways will happen all day. This was started by CEDAM (Community Economic Development Association of Michigan) along with their sponsor Consumers Energy to kick off the tax season to have events like this to help others “increase income, save and build assets,” (https://cedamichigan.org/moneyday/ ). Buchanan District Library will be hosting three – 45 minute workshops in their community room being presented by Stephanie N. Robinson, Financial Wellness Coach from Summit Financial Wellness.

Schedule of Workshops in the Buchanan District Library Community Room:

  • Budgeting/Borrowing 12:30pm – 1:15pm
  • Credit Strategies Part 1 1:45pm – 2:30pm
  • Credit Strategies Part 2 3:00pm – 3:45pm

“This event helps us deliver on our mission of For Good, Forever by continuing to provide assistance to the community with access to low cost financial products, community resources, workshops and assistance. Without these important opportunities many community members are left with disadvantages that make reaching their goals very difficult. So, we are proud to be a part of lifting them up,” says Michigan Gateway Community Foundation President and CEO, Michael Rowland.

Local vendors will be in the Redbud City Center for you to peruse (more may be added on after this publication): Buchanan Area Senior Center, Buchanan College Club, Buchanan District Library, Buchanan Promise, Ferry Street Resources, Honor Credit Union, Kickstart To Career, Lake Michigan College, Niles Sturgis Bank, Southwestern Michigan College, Summit Financial Wellness, and United Federal Credit Union. “This is an “Open House” style so you don’t have to stay the whole day or come right at 12pm. Maybe just come for lunch and see which vendor you would like to visit and learn about, or just come for one or all workshops, or better yet, come for the entire time after you go to the Buchanan Farmers’ Market and Pears Mill opening day!” said Jennifer Popielski, event contact person and Senior Program Officer of Kickstart and YAC.

One important thing to know, and what the Michigan Gateway Community Foundation team needs to know is if you are planning to come so they know how much food to have. They are also “looking for volunteers to help serve food, setting up and tear down, door prizes, assist with the financial wellness coach in the community room and the survey,” states Jennifer Popielski. Please register your RSVP at their website: https://www.mgcf.org/show-me-the-money-day.

About Michigan Gateway Community Foundation: From our single community beginning in October of 1977, we have evolved into a full service, accredited, and standards compliant Foundation serving Southern Berrien County, focused on Niles and Buchanan, and all of Cass County. Our mission: fostering a community of philanthropy, for good, forever. Strong community support has steadily grown the Foundation. We now have over 135 separate funds, with new ones added every year. The largest single gift to the Foundation was transferred in 2016 from the estate of Walter E. Schirmer, Jr., son of one of the original founders of the Buchanan Area Foundation, which today is Michigan Gateway Community Foundation. In excess of $8,000,000, the gift funds the Buchanan Promise, a place-based scholarship for graduates of Buchanan High School. The Foundation doubled in size with this gift, today holding endowment assets totaling more than $25,000,500.
